Great Blacks in Wax Museum
1601-03 E. North Avenue • Baltimore, MD 21213 • 410.563.3404
In the northeast corner of the city, this is the nation's first and only wax museum dedicated to famous African-American heroes and historical legends. Displays are in chronological order, and each highlights a period in African-American history, from ancient Africa to slavery and the Civil War to the Civil Rights era. The people portrayed include black inventors, pilots, religious and educational leaders, scientists, and more. Quite a few Marylanders are among these, such as Frederick Douglass and Thurgood Marshall. Plans for expansion are underway, with a phase devoted mostly to staff and visitors' comfort to be completed in 2003. The second phase will add gallery space, a restaurant, and the Royal Theatre Heritage Center. Look for it in 2005.
