American Idol is an annual American televised singing competition which began its first season in June of 2002. The program is seeking to discover the best young singer in the country through a series of nationwide auditions. The outcomes of the later stages of the competition are determined by public voting. There are three judges who critique the performers: a record producer and bass player Randy Jackson, former pop star Paula Abdul, and producer and manager Simon Cowell. Ryan Seacrest is the current host.
Each season releases a compilation album with the top 12 finalists (top 10 for season one) is released. Other compilations such as a Christmas album have also been released in the past. The top 10 finalists participate in the postseason American Idol promotional concert tour.
Many stars have emerged from the show including:
- Kelly Clarkson: Clarkson was the season one winner signing with RCA Records. She has two albums out currently with her third coming out in 2007. She has won four American Music Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards, and two Grammy Awards.

- Carrie Underwood: Underwood was the season four winner. She has released one album and is scheduled to release her second album sometime in 2007. She has one American Music Award, eight Billboard Music Awards, and two Grammy Awards.

- Clay Aiken: Aiken was the runner-up from season two. He has released three albums and has won one American Music Award and three Billboard Music Awards.

- Jennifer Hudson: Hudson participated in season three accelerating to the seventh position. She went on to tour with the group and was praised for her performances. She has since received an Oscar for her supporting actress role in Dreamgirls. Her six octave range has compared her to the likes of Patti Labelle, Whitney Houston, and Jennifer Holiday.
- Ruben Studdard: Studdard was the season two winner and he has released three albums.

- Chris Daughtry of Daughtry: He placed fourth in season five and has gone on to release his first album with his band Daughtry. It was released in November 2006 and it is 2x platinum.

- Fantasia Barrino: Barrino was the season three winner and has released two albums. She has won three Billboard Music Awards.
- Bo Bice: Bice was the season four runner-up. He has released one album.

- Taylor Hicks: Hicks was the season five winner and has released three albums to date.

- Josh Gracin: Gracin placed fourth in season two and has gone on to release one album. His second album is scheduled to be released sometime in 2007.

- Kellie Pickler: Pickler placed sixth in season five and has gone on to release one album.

- David Cook: David is the winner of the seventh American Idol, winning the competition in a landslide. After completing the 2008 American Idols Live tour, the Blue Springs, Missouri native is expected to release his debut recording, which will be appearing on the RCA record label and will be available this fall. David has already experienced chart-topping success with the release of his 2008 single, "The Time of My Life," which debuted at number 3 on the Hot 100.
