Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947. He began playing the piano at age four, and at age 11 received a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music.  After studying for six years he left the academy in hopes of getting in to the music industry. He joined his first band, Bluesology, in 1961 and played both with the band and as a solo artist. By 1965 the band was backing many musicians.

In 1966, Bluesology became the supporting band for Long John Baldry. He changed his name shortly thereafter to Elton John—Elton from Elton Dean and John from John Baldry. Dick James hired John and Taupin as staff writers in 1968. Over the next couple of years the two collaborated at a fast rate and wrote songs for many pop singers. By the summer of 1968 Elton John had started recording singles to be released in his name—and in 1969 he released his debut album “Empty Sky.” His second album was released in 1970 and he played his first concert in LA and had a great review. In 1971, he came out with “Tumbleweed Connection” which climbed to the top 10.

Elton John had hit after hit between 1972 and 1976. He even had a streak of seven consecutive number one albums during this time! In 1974 he co-wrote John Lennon’s number one comeback single. In 1976 he revealed that he was bisexual in an interview with Rolling Stones, but later confessed that he was afraid to reveal that he is really homosexual. Many of his fans reacted negatively to this—he ended up cutting his schedule drastically and announcing that he was retiring from live performances.

Elton John is one of the biggest pop superstars of the 1970’s and in the 1980’s his albums consistently went gold. In the 1990’s he returned to the studio and recorded “The One.” Since then he has collaborated with many other artists and produced new albums. In 2001, he did a duet with Eminem at the Grammy Awards. He is still performing live, creating new collaborations, and is going to involve himself in musical theatre once again.
