This could be the most talented team Coach Rick Pitino has had since his return to the college basketball sidelines. The team has so much depth and experienced talent; many are hailing the Cardinals as one of the teams to beat in the Big East and in Division 1. Can his team live up to the billing? If not, you certainly won’t be able to blame the talent level, unless injuries blight this team.

The Cardinal frontline is imposing with seniors David Padgett and Juan Palacios doing the grunt work in the paint. They will be joined by swingman Terrence Williams, the leading scorer from last year’s team. The backcourt will be manned by Edgar Sosa and Jerry Smith. Both players are exceptional guards that can score the ball from the outside with little trouble. Pitino’s talent level doesn’t stop with his starting 5 either. Earl Clark and Derrick Character give Louisville something a lot of teams don’t have: quality depth in the post position. Both are capable of starting for a lot of D1 teams.

Can Coach Pitino mold his team into a championship contender? That’s certainly a calling card of his and if they can avoid the injury bug, there’s no reason Cardinal fans can’t expect great things from this team. With a schedule that Pitino called one of the toughest he’s seen in his coaching career, it won’t be an easy road. However, there certainly is enough talent for the Cards to make a substantial run in the Big East and in the Big Dance.
