The SEC road for Vandy has rarely been an easy one. Even when they have players like the Denver Broncos starting quarterback Jay Cutler, there is hardly ever any talk about Vanderbilt on a national scale, unless it is to make fun. The primary reason for this level of disrespect? Vandy plays its football in the SEC, the nation's toughest college football conference. One has to think if the Commodores played in a smaller conference, they would probably have experienced success in the vein of Boise State.

However, for Head Coach Bobby Johnson, the idea of playing spoiler in an ultra-conference like the SEC is more appealing than dominating a mid-major. And when you consider the team the Commodores will field this season, the idea of Vanderbilt as a major spoiler to the bigger SEC teams is certainly plausible. There are two primary reasons for this level of confidence, and it lies in the quarterbacking skills of Chris Nickson—a definite dual threat to run and throw—and the leading receiver in the SEC, Earl Bennet. When you couple these two with an experienced offensive line, Vandy looks like a legitimately good team, especially on offense.

Is 2007 the year Coach Johnson and his Commodores turn the corner from also-ran to conference contender? There probably won't be that much improvement, but a .500 or better record-combined with a bowl game appearance certainly does seem attainable.
