1st & 2nd Rounds
The 1st and 2nd rounds of the 2009 NCAA Tournament are held in eight cities: Miami, Philadelphia, Greensboro, Dayton, Minneapolis, Boise, Portland, and Kansas City. The play-in game will be played in Dayton.

During the 1st and 2nd round of the tournament, each site is assigned two pods. The pod system features four seeded teams, and each higher ranked team is matched-up with a lower ranked one. The winner of these games advances to play the other pod winner and the winner of that match-up moves on to the Sweet Sixteen (regional semi-finals).
