Boston Fine Dining

Aujour d'hui
200 Boylston Street • Boston, MA • 617.351.2037

On the second floor of the city's premier luxury hotel, the most beautiful restaurant in town has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Public Garden. But even if it were under a pup tent, the incredible service and food would make Aujourd'hui a hit with its special-occasion and expense-account clientele. Yes, the cost is astronomical, but how often is it true that you get what you pay for? Here, you do.

The regularly changing menu encompasses basic hotel-restaurant offerings and the creations that characterize an inventive kitchen. Executive chef Edward Gannon uses regional products and the freshest ingredients available, and the wine list is excellent. To start, try a perfectly balanced seasonal soup or a huge salad. Entrees might include pepper-crusted tuna with balsamic vinegar sauce, or grilled beef tenderloin with parsnip purée, oxtail ravioli, and grilled oyster mushrooms; there's always a lobster option, too. The dessert menu also changes; it includes picture-perfect soufflés and homemade sorbets.

L' Espalier
Thirty Gloucester Street • Boston, MA • 617.262.3023
Dinner at L'Espalier is a unique experience, very much like spending the evening at the home of a dear friend who has only your pleasure in mind -- and a dozen helpers in the kitchen. Owners Catherine and Frank McClelland (he's the chef) preside over three dining rooms on the second floor of an 1886 town house. The space is formal yet inviting, and the service is excellent. The food, an exploration of the freshest and most interesting ingredients available, is magnificent.

A first course of flambéed Maine lobster arrives with baby zucchini and creamed spiced pumpkin, and perfectly balanced fresh cabernet grape vinaigrette dresses a salad of greens with wild rice, herbed polenta, and white asparagus. Main courses are equally imaginative: perhaps arctic char in a parsley-citrus crust with red-pepper relish and lemony rosemary broth, or beef filet and prawn with a sauce of cabernet sauvignon, black truffle, and marrow. The breads, sorbets, ice creams, and alarmingly good desserts (many adapted from the family's heirloom cookbooks) are made in-house. Even if you order one of the superb soufflés, ask to see the beautiful desserts. Or finish with the celebrated cheese tray, which always includes two local selections.

Legal Sea Foods
800 Boylston Street • Boston, MA 02199 • 617.266.6800
Take a break from world-class shopping on nearby Newbury and Boylston streets. This high-pitched and fast-paced restaurant features floor-to-ceiling windows, giving diners a ringside seat to the action below. Relax in cozy banquette tables amidst Legal's trademark tile and mahogany paneling.

This family-owned business enjoys an international reputation for serving only top-quality fish and shellfish. The menu includes regular selections (scrod, haddock, bluefish, salmon, shrimp, calamari, and lobster, among others) plus whatever was at market that morning, prepared in every imaginable way, and it's all splendid. The clam chowder is great, the fish chowder lighter but equally good. Entrees run the gamut from grilled fish served plain or with Cajun spices (try the arctic char) to seafood fra'diavolo on fresh linguine to salmon baked in parchment with vegetables and white wine. Or go the luxurious route and order a mammoth lobster. The classic dessert is ice cream bonbons, but the Boston cream pie is so good that you might come back just for that.
