Fenway Park Information

Fenway Park
4 Yawkey Way • Boston, MA 02215

Fenway Park is the home of the Boston Red Sox. Fenway Park opened on April 20, 1912 and is the oldest ballpark still in use in Major League Baseball! It opened just five days after the sinking of the Titanic. It is located near Fenway neighborhood in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts. Fenway hosted the 1946, 1961, and 1999 Major League Baseball All-Star games.

Fenway Park hasn’t been kind to left handed pitchers, Babe Ruth being one of the few exceptions. Ruth started his career as a pitcher. He had a career of 94 wins and 46 losses. Babe Ruth set a World Series record by pitching 29 scoreless innings—a record that has since been broken by Whitey Ford of the New York Yankees in 1961. The stadium is most famous for the left field wall called the “Green Monster”. The “Green Monster” was built in 1934 and is a 37 foot two inch high, 240 feet long wall with a 22 foot deep foundation. During the 1934 renovation the left field scoreboard was added and is one of two remaining original manual scoreboards in professional baseball. In 1975, the wall was renovated and an electronic scoreboard was installed in the park and the manual scoreboard was set to only show out of town scores from other American League games. In 1976, the railroad panels in the wall were replaced with Formica type panel which made less noise when balls hit the wall.

Look out into the bleachers and notice the lone red seat in the right field which is the spot where the longest measurable home run ever hit inside Fenway Park landed. Ted Williams hit the home run on June 9, 1946 off Fred Hutchinson of the Detroit Tigers. It was officially measured at 502 feet—if the ball would have gone unobstructed then it would have flown 520 to 535 feet.

In game six of the 1975 World Series—Carlton “Pudge” Fisk hit a ball and it appeared to be heading foul, but Fisk after being unsure of whether the ball was foul or not continued to run to first base and famously jumped and waved his arms to the right as if it somehow would direct the ball fair—the ball ricocheted off the foul pole and won the game for the Red Sox and sent the series to a seventh and deciding game the next night!

Fenway has had several renovations over the years, but the latest is the plan to add approximately 700 tickets for the 2007 season and 1,400 tickets for the 2008 season. The Red Sox also would like to replace the Grandstand section wood seats in the future as well.

Fenway Park will always be remembered for the echoes of great baseball players like Cy Young, Babe Ruth, Jimmy Collins, Duffy Lewis, Tris Speaker, Harry Hooper, Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky, Ted Williams, Jimmie Foxx, Carlton Fisk, Jim Rice, and Carl Yastrzemski to name just a few.
