Atlanta Thrashers
Atlanta was awarded an NHL franchise in 1997 to replace the Atlanta Flames who departed for Calgary in 1980 and became the Calgary Flames. The newly formed Atlanta Thrashers played their first game on October 2, 1999 losing to the eventual Stanley Cup champions, the New Jersey Devils. The Thrashers play in Philips Arena.

In September of 2003 the team was sold to a group of executives by Time Warner, along with the National Basketball Association's Atlanta Hawks. The 2003-04 season was dedicated to Dan Snyder who was killed in a car accident as a passenger of player Dany Heatley who was seriously injured in the one car accident. The players wore black patches with Snyder's number, 37, on their jerseys. The Thrashers never made the playoffs and their best complete season was in 2005-06 when they missed the playoffs by only two points.

Bob Hartley is the second head coach in franchise history of the Atlanta Thrashers. He used his experience as a Stanley Cup champion to help guide the Thrashers to the most successful and exciting season in the franchise's six year history in 2005-06. He led the club to their first winning record of 41-33-8. He joined Atlanta's program in January of 2003 and holds a 93-89-21 record through the 2005-06 season.
